Leadership conferences enable students to develop leadership skills and access successful leaders, all in a single weekend. The Conference Committee works with other leadership organizations to host these conferences and seeks to engage a diverse group of student. Set in the spring semester, the annual Perspectives on Leadership Conference brings student leadership to life with compelling speakers, panels, and workshops.

This one-day conference began in March 2008 as a joint conference between the United States Military Academy and the Leadership Institute at Yale. This year, the Leadership Institute is increasing the number of participant schools to include other military academies, Ivy League institutions, and several leadership-related organizations across the country, as well as the Yale School of Management. The conference has traditionally explored the similarities and differences that unique leadership styles share based on individuals' backgrounds and experiences.

Spring 2015: Perspectives on Leadership Conference

The Leadership Institute at Yale hosted its annual "Perspectives on Leadership" conference last year with the mission of bringing together leaders on each campus and organization. The conference is taking place on April 10 - 11th, 2015 at Yale University's Elm City Club.

This year, the conference focused on how various leadership styles develop in different fields--politics, military, economics, business, academia, and non-profits--and from different backgrounds. The conference also fostered relationships among leaders in different institutions and organizations across the nation.

The conference hosted a total of five leadership experts from various fields, using small-group settings to maximize the advantage of intimate interactions during simulations, discussions, and workshops.

Past Speakers include Professor Thomas Kolditz from Yale University School of Management, Professor in the Practice of Leadership and Management, Professor Victor Vroom from Yale University School of Management, BearingPoint Professor of Management & Professor of Psychology, Commander Arthur Gibb from United States Naval Academy, and others.

Participants at past Perspectives on Leadership conferences

  • Gained an appreciation for different leadership styles based on each individual’s perspective, life experience and background.
  • Acquired an understanding of the unique qualities of individuals and how these qualities affected their decision making. This increased understanding allows for more effective leadership and cooperation with future collaborators.
  • Realized their strengths and weaknesses as leaders and teammates through hands-on learning experiences and interactions with other group members.
